New relationships between nature, technology, and people
With projects in over 50 countries, Kengo Kuma (Yokohama, 1954) is renowned for blending traditional Japanese architecture with contemporary and innovative design.
Among his most iconic buildings are the Japan National Stadium, built for the 2020 Olympic Games, the Dallas Rolex Tower, The Exchange in Sydney, and the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Suntory Museum of Art, both in Tokyo.
In his work, Kuma integrates natural elements with modern materials and site-specific features.
Prolific in publishing essays, he is especially celebrated for his book Anti-Object: The Dissolution and Disintegration of Architecture (2008), which advocates for architecture's respect for the environment against dominant stances.
A descent into the depths
Draped in aluminum curtains, the meticulous materiality of the staircase captures the light like a fishing net, revealing its shapes, gleams, silhouettes, and shadows, erasing the presence of the original structure.
